Engagement Ring Buyer's Guide
Things to Know When Choosing Your Engagement Ring
Choosing an engagement ring should feel reassuring rather than overwhelming. At Kin & Kin, we draw on decades of fine jewellery knowledge to guide you through each step—from diamond selection and coloured gemstones to precious metals, ring styles, and bespoke design. What follows is a clear, dependable guide to help you make a confident and informed choice.
Understanding the Four Cs
The Four Cs—Colour, Cut, Clarity, and Carat—remain the foundation of diamond assessment. They are used internationally, and the most respected authority for grading is the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The majority of our natural and lab-grown diamonds are accompanied by independent GIA or IGI certification for complete peace of mind.
Colour
Colour is one of the first characteristics the eye perceives. For a bright, classic white appearance, most clients choose diamonds in the D–G range, though beautifully cut H or I diamonds can still appear luminous—particularly at larger carat sizes where colour becomes more noticeable.
Fancy colours, such as yellow, cognac, champagne, and pink, offer an alternative expression of style. Natural pink diamonds are rare and therefore command a premium; yellow, cognac, and champagne tones offer a more accessible route into coloured diamonds whilst retaining the durability and brilliance of the gem.
Clarity
Clarity refers to tiny natural features formed within the diamond as it crystallised deep within the Earth. Most inclusions are microscopic and invisible to the naked eye. For exceptional long-term beauty, we typically recommend Flawless to VS2 in brilliant-cut diamonds. This range provides excellent clarity and exceptional value whilst ensuring the stone appears clean to the eye.
Cut
Cut is the only one of the Four Cs influenced by human craftsmanship, and it has the greatest impact on brilliance. A well-cut diamond reflects and refracts light with precision, producing fire, sparkle, and life. Cut quality can transform a diamond from ordinary to extraordinary. This is an area where we specialise: identifying stones where proportions, facet alignment, crown height, and pavilion angles are optimised for exceptional brilliance.
Carat
Carat is a measure of weight rather than size. Two diamonds of identical carat weight can appear noticeably different depending on their cut proportions. Our expertise lies in sourcing stones with elegant proportions that maximise visual spread without compromising light performance—an important consideration for clients seeking the most impressive stone within a given budget.
Choosing the Right Diamond Shape
Different diamond shapes reveal different characteristics:
Emerald, Asscher, and step-cut diamonds have long, open facets. These emphasise clarity, so we advise looking at VVS or higher, whilst often allowing more flexibility on colour.
Round, Oval, Pear, Radiant, and Cushion shapes are brilliant cuts. Their tightly arranged facets create strong sparkle, helping to disguise minor inclusions. A well-chosen SI1 can appear completely clean to the eye.
Choosing shape is ultimately a matter of taste and the style of ring you envision. During a consultation we are able to source and present carefully selected stones tailored to your preferred look.
If You Prefer a Gemstone Instead of a Diamond
Whilst diamonds remain the most traditional choice—largely shaped by the "A Diamond Is Forever" campaign of the 20th century—they are not the only option. Gemstones offer individuality, colour, and character.
Sapphire
Sapphires are the second most durable gemstone after diamond and are available in every colour except red. From classic blue to peach, teal, yellow, and ice-white, they're an excellent option for an everyday engagement ring.
Ruby
Rubies share the same mineral composition as sapphires (corundum) and offer outstanding durability for daily wear. A fine ruby can be a remarkable and vivid alternative to a red diamond.
Gemstones to Approach with Care
Some gemstones—emeralds in particular—are less suited to the demands of everyday wear due to their natural brittleness and sensitivity to knocks, heat, and chemicals. We are always candid about longevity: if a stone is not suitable for daily wear, we will guide you towards a more resilient option.
How to Choose an Engagement Ring as a Surprise
If you are selecting a ring without your partner's input, there are several discreet ways to gather clues:
- Existing jewellery — note the metal colour and general style: understated, modern, vintage, or bold
- Watch style — often a reliable indicator of preferred metal and aesthetic
- Personality and wardrobe — elegant minimalism versus expressive statement pieces
- Existing rings — if possible, borrowing a ring they already wear helps identify an approximate size
If sizing is uncertain, we create the ring in a standard size and resize it free of charge after the proposal for a perfect fit.
A photograph of your partner can also be surprisingly useful. With decades of combined experience, we can usually infer stylistic preferences—setting styles, stone shapes, proportions, and overall design direction—based on posture, clothing choices, and personal aesthetic.
